  • SQL Server 2008 R2

    What's New in R2

With this new release, IT professionals, developers and business users will experience the following benefits:

    Capitalize on Hardware Innovation

Increase in the number of logical processors supported from 64 up to 256.  This will provide customers with more choices for obtaining single system scalability with high performance.

    Optimize Hardware Resources

Dashboard viewpoints provide insight into utilization and policy violations to help identify consolidation opportunities, maximize investments and maintain healthy systems.

    Manage Efficiently at Scale

Through new extensions in SQL Server Management Studio, organizations will gain insights into their growing applications and databases and help ensure higher service levels through policies and dashboard viewpoints.

Enhance Collaboration Across Development and IT

Streamline Application Lifecycle Management through integration with Visual Studio. A new project type enables a single unit of management for packaging database schema with application requirements. This ensures higher quality application development while also accelerating deployments, moves, and changes over time.

Improve the Quality of Your Data

Centralized approach to defining, deploying, and managing master data can ensure reporting consistency across systems and deliver faster more accurate results across the enterprise.

    Manage User-Generated Analytical Applications

Comprehensive management thru Microsoft SharePoint gives IT the ability to manage and secure all BI assets, thus freeing the original authors to focus on the priorities of the business.

    Report with Ease

Decrease time and costs developing reports by giving users the ability to design their own queries, reports and charts through powerful and intuitive authoring and ad hoc reporting capabilities.

Get More Out of Your Data

New support for geospatial visualization can produce new insights and discoveries when geospatial data is combined with corporate data for reporting and analysis.

    Build Robust Analytical Applications

With the in-memory analytics add-in for Microsoft Excel 2010, business users can quickly access, analyze and summarize vast amounts of data directly in Excel without the assistance of the IT department.

    Consolidate Your Data

New “data mash up” capabilities will simplify time consuming data gathering and consolidation tasks.  Integrate data from multiple sources, including corporate databases and external sources, using powerful tools within Microsoft Excel. online backup

    Share and Collaborate with Confidence

New collaboration tools make it easy to share analytic applications and reports through Microsoft Office SharePoint, where they are refreshed automatically, maintained, and made accessible to others.

  • Microsoft SQL Server JDBC Driver 2.0

In its continued commitment to interoperability, Microsoft has released a new Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) driver. The SQL Server JDBC Driver 2.0 download is available to all SQL Server users at no additional charge, and provides access to SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005, and SQL Server 2008 from any Java application, application server, or Java-enabled applet. This is a Type 4 JDBC driver that provides database connectivity through the standard JDBC application program interfaces (APIs) available in Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 5.

This release of the JDBC Driver is JDBC 4.0 compliant and runs on the Java Development Kit (JDK) version 5.0 or later. It has been tested against all major application servers including BEA WebLogic, IBM WebSphere, and JBoss.

Note: In order to download the SQL Server JDBC Driver 2.0, you must agree to the End-User License Agreement (EULA). Start by clicking the Download button at the top of this page and the EULA will appear. Read the EULA and click the Accept link to download the package. Please print a copy online backup of the EULA for your records.

Note: Peer-to-peer support is available in the SQL Server forums. To submit feedback on this JDBC Driver release, visit the SQL Server Feedback Center.

  • CTP for Service Pack 1 of SQL Server 2008 Available

Today we are excited to announce the availability of our Community Technology Preview (CTP) for Service Pack 1 of SQL Server 2008. This scheduled servicing release addresses feedback received from many of you who have deployed SQL Server 2008 since our release back in August 2008.

We take every update to SQL Server very seriously and we are especially pleased that in reviewing the changes being made with this service pack that we have reinforced our confidence(and hopefully yours!) in the quality of the initial release of SQL Server 2008. We know that some of you wait for the first service pack of any new software product, and hopefully with this update you will have even more insight and confidence in our engineering and quality assurance practices.

We remain committed to keeping service packs contained, focusing on essential updates only, primarily a roll-up of Cumulative Update 1 to 3, Quick Fix Engineering (QFE) updates, as well as fixes to issues reported through the SQL Server community. While keeping product changes contained, we have made significant investments to ease deployment and management of service packs:

    • Slipstream – You are now able to integrate the base installation with service packs (or Hotfixes) and install in a single step.
    • Service Pack Uninstall – You are now able to uninstall only the service pack (without removing the whole instance)
    • Report Builder 2.0 Click Once capability

We encourage you to try out SP1, and send us your feedback. We actively read all feedback and appreciate any thoughts that you might have to help us with product updates.  Please go to the Connect Feedback Center to provide feedback. Continue to watch this blog for more updates hosted exchange.

With the upcoming general availability of SP1, it’s a good time for any of you that are still running SQL Server 2005 (or even SQL Server 2000) to take a look at the great enhancements and benefits that SQL Server 2008 provides. There are a lot of new capabilities that maybe you haven’t had a chance to explore such as Compression, Auditing, Policy Based Management, Resource Governor, Change Data Capture, Transparent Data Encryption and many more Database, Reporting, Warehousing and Analytics improvements that you can read about here.

Thanks and we look forward to releasing SP1 soon!

1This SQL Server edition can be upgraded to SQL Server 2008 on the 32-bit subsystem (WOW64) of a 64-bit server.

2Changing the edition of a SQL Server 2008 failover cluster is limited. The following edition downgrade scenarios are not supported for SQL Server 2008 failover clusters:

    • SQL Server 2008 Enterprise to SQL Server 2008 Developer, Standard, or Enterprise Evaluation.
    • SQL Server 2008 Developer to SQL Server 2008 Standard or Enterprise Evaluation.
    • SQL Server 2008 Standard to SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Evaluation.
    • SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Evaluation to SQL Server 2008 Standard.

3Upgrade of SQL Server 2000 (64-Bit) IA64 failover clusters are not supported.

4Upgrade of SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services to SQL Server 2008 is not supported on failover clusters.

5Upgrade of SQL Server 2000 (64-Bit) will not install SQL Server 2008 Management Tools. To install Management Tools, you musr re-run Setup after the upgrade is complete.

    Upgrade Notes

    • Cross-version instances of SQL Server 2008 are not supported. Version numbers of the Database Engine, Analysis Services, and Reporting Services components must be the same in an instance of SQL Server 2008.
    • Before upgrading SQL Server, enable Windows Authentication for SQL Server Agent and verify the default configuration: that the SQL Server Agent service account is a member of the SQL Server sysadmin group.
    • Before upgrading from one edition of SQL Server 2008 to another, verify that the functionality you are currently using is supported in the edition to which you are upgrading. For more information, see the section for your components in Features Supported by the Editions of SQL Server 2008.
    • Cross-platform upgrade is not supported. You cannot upgrade a 32-bit instance of SQL Server to native 64-bit. However, you can upgrade a 32-bit instance of SQL Server to the WOW64: the 32-bit subsystem on a 64-bit server as noted in the table above. You can also back up or detach databases from a 32-bit instance of SQL Server, and then restore or attach them to an instance of SQL Server (64-bit) if the databases are not published in replication. In this case, you must also re-create any logins and other user objects in master, msdb, and model system databases.
    • To upgrade to SQL Server 2008, you must be running a supported operating system. For more information, see Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2008.
    • Upgrade will be blocked if there is a pending restart.
    • Upgrade will be blocked if the Windows Installer service is not running.
    • Upgrade will be blocked if performance counters are corrupt.
    • To upgrade an instance of SQL Server to a SQL Server failover cluster, the instance being upgraded must be a failover cluster. To upgrade a stand-alone instance of SQL Server to a SQL Server failover cluster, install a new SQL Server failover cluster and then migrate user databases from the stand-alone instance by using the Copy Database Wizard. For more information about upgrade, see How to: Upgrade a SQL Server Failover Cluster Instance (Setup). For more information about database migration, see Using the Copy Database Wizard.

You cannot add components to an existing installation of SQL Server at the time you upgrade to SQL Server 2008.After you upgrade an instance of SQL Server to SQL Server 2008, you can add features by using the SQL Server 2008 Installation Wizard: Setup.exe.

    • The English-language version of SQL Server is supported on all localized versions of supported operating systems.
    • Localized versions of SQL Server are supported on localized operating systems that are the same language as the localized SQL Server version.
    • Localized versions of SQL Server can be upgraded to localized versions of SQL Server 2008 of the same language.
    • Localized versions of SQL Server cannot be upgraded to the English-language version of SQL Server 2008.
    • Localized versions of SQL Server cannot be upgraded to localized SQL Server 2008 versions of a different localized language.
    • Localized versions of SQL Server are also supported on English-language versions of supported operating systems by using the Windows Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) settings. However, you must verify certain operating system settings before you install a localized version of SQL Server on a server that is running an English-language operating system with a non-English MUI setting. You must verify that the following operating system settings match the language of SQL Server to be installed:
      • The operating system user interface setting
      • The operating system user locale setting
      • The system locale setting
If these operating system settings do not match the language of the localized SQL Server, you must correctly set these operating system settings before you install SQL Server 2008.

    SQL Server 2005 Features Comparison

    Published: November 7, 2005 | Updated: May 22, 2006

At Microsoft, we believe that software should provide you with choices that let you find the solution best tailored to your business’ needs. To that end, we have redesigned the SQL Server 2005 product family to better meet the needs of each customer segment with four new editions: Express, Workgroup, Standard, and Enterprise. As a low-cost mainstream database, SQL Server 2005 will deliver unprecedented value and functionality compared with competitive solutions. The four new editions will offer a range of features, from high availability and robust scalability to advanced business intelligence tools, designed to empower the people across your organization through a more secure, reliable, and productive data management platform. Additionally, with the reduced application downtime, robust scalability and performance, and tight security controls, SQL Server 2005 represents a dramatic step forward in supporting the most demanding enterprise systems in the world. Because SQL Server is part of Windows Server System, you will also receive the added benefits of reduced total cost of ownership and faster development time through the increased manageability and integration that result from the common engineering strategy implemented across Windows Server System products. The table below presents details about each of the different editions.

Notes: In the following table, the "Comments" column provides comments on the specified feature. Numbers next to check marks indicate footnotes that appear at the bottom of the page. SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition and Evaluation Edition are not listed in the tables. These editions have the same feature set as the Enterprise Edition; the only difference between these editions is the licensing policies.
