Microsoft SQL Server JDBC Driver 2.0

In its continued commitment to interoperability, Microsoft has released a new Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) driver. The SQL Server JDBC Driver 2.0 download is available to all SQL Server users at no additional charge, and provides access to SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005, and SQL Server 2008 from any Java application, application server, or Java-enabled applet. This is a Type 4 JDBC driver that provides database connectivity through the standard JDBC application program interfaces (APIs) available in Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 5.

This release of the JDBC Driver is JDBC 4.0 compliant and runs on the Java Development Kit (JDK) version 5.0 or later. It has been tested against all major application servers including BEA WebLogic, IBM WebSphere, and JBoss.

Note: In order to download the SQL Server JDBC Driver 2.0, you must agree to the End-User License Agreement (EULA). Start by clicking the Download button at the top of this page and the EULA will appear. Read the EULA and click the Accept link to download the package. Please print a copy online backup of the EULA for your records.

CTP for Service Pack 1 of SQL Server 2008 Available

Today we are excited to announce the availability of our Community Technology Preview (CTP) for Service Pack 1 of SQL Server 2008. This scheduled servicing release addresses feedback received from many of you who have deployed SQL Server 2008 since our release back in August 2008.

We take every update to SQL Server very seriously and we are especially pleased that in reviewing the changes being made with this service pack that we have reinforced our confidence(and hopefully yours!) in the quality of the initial release of SQL Server 2008. We know that some of you wait for the first service pack of any new software product, and hopefully with this update you will have even more insight and confidence in our engineering and quality assurance practices.

We remain committed to keeping service packs contained, focusing on essential updates only, primarily a roll-up of Cumulative Update 1 to 3, Quick Fix Engineering (QFE) updates, as well as fixes to issues reported through the SQL Server community. While keeping product changes contained, we have made significant investments to ease deployment and management of service packs:

Slipstream – You are now able to integrate the base installation with service packs (or Hotfixes) and install in a single step.
Service Pack Uninstall – You are now able to uninstall only the service pack (without removing the whole instance)
Report Builder 2.0 Click Once capability

Upgrade Notes

Cross-version instances of SQL Server 2008 are not supported. Version numbers of the Database Engine, Analysis Services, and Reporting Services components must be the same in an instance of SQL Server 2008.
Before upgrading SQL Server, enable Windows Authentication for SQL Server Agent and verify the default configuration: that the SQL Server Agent service account is a member of the SQL Server sysadmin group.
Before upgrading from one edition of SQL Server 2008 to another, verify that the functionality you are currently using is supported in the edition to which you are upgrading. For more information, see the section for your components in Features Supported by the Editions of SQL Server 2008.
Cross-platform upgrade is not supported. You cannot upgrade a 32-bit instance of SQL Server to native 64-bit. However, you can upgrade a 32-bit instance of SQL Server to the WOW64: the 32-bit subsystem on a 64-bit server as noted in the table above. You can also back up or detach databases from a 32-bit instance of SQL Server, and then restore or attach them to an instance of SQL Server (64-bit) if the databases are not published in replication. In this case, you must also re-create any logins and other user objects in master, msdb, and model system databases.
To upgrade to SQL Server 2008, you must be running a supported operating system. For more information, see Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2008.
Upgrade will be blocked if there is a pending restart.
Upgrade will be blocked if the Windows Installer service is not running.
Upgrade will be blocked if performance counters are corrupt.
To upgrade an instance of SQL Server to a SQL Server failover cluster, the instance being upgraded must be a failover cluster. To upgrade a stand-alone instance of SQL Server to a SQL Server failover cluster, install a new SQL Server failover cluster and then migrate user databases from the stand-alone instance by using the Copy Database Wizard. For more information about upgrade, see How to: Upgrade a SQL Server Failover Cluster Instance (Setup). For more information about database migration, see Using the Copy Database Wizard.

Adding Components to an Instance of SQL Server

You cannot add components to an existing installation of SQL Server at the time you upgrade to SQL Server 2008.After you upgrade an instance of SQL Server to SQL Server 2008, you can add features by using the SQL Server 2008 Installation Wizard: Setup.exe.

Cross-Language Support

The English-language version of SQL Server is supported on all localized versions of supported operating systems.
Localized versions of SQL Server are supported on localized operating systems that are the same language as the localized SQL Server version.
Localized versions of SQL Server can be upgraded to localized versions of SQL Server 2008 of the same language.
Localized versions of SQL Server cannot be upgraded to the English-language version of SQL Server 2008.
Localized versions of SQL Server cannot be upgraded to localized SQL Server 2008 versions of a different localized language.
Localized versions of SQL Server are also supported on English-language versions of supported operating systems by using the Windows Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) settings. However, you must verify certain operating system settings before you install a localized version of SQL Server on a server that is running an English-language operating system with a non-English MUI setting. You must verify that the following operating system settings match the language of SQL Server to be installed:
- The operating system user interface setting
- The operating system user locale setting
- The system locale setting
If these operating system settings do not match the language of the localized SQL Server, you must correctly set these operating system settings before you install SQL Server 2008.

In its continued commitment to interoperability, Microsoft has released a new SQL Server 2005 Driver for PHP. The SQL Server 2005 Driver for PHP Community Technology Preview (CTP) download is available to all SQL Server users at no additional charge. The SQL Server 2005 Driver for PHP is a PHP 5 extension that allows for the reading and writing of SQL Server data from within PHP scripts. The extension provides a procedural interface for accessing data in all editions of SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2000.

Overview

In its continued commitment to interoperability, Microsoft has released a new Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) driver with SQL Server 2005. The SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver 1.2 download is available to all SQL Server users at no additional charge, and provides access to SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005 from any Java application, application server, or Java-enabled applet. This is a Type 4 JDBC driver that provides database connectivity through the standard JDBC application program interfaces (APIs) available in J2EE (Java2 Enterprise Edition).

This release of the JDBC Driver is JDBC 3.0 compliant and runs on the Java Development Kit (JDK) version 1.4 and higher. It has been tested against all major application servers including BEA WebLogic, IBM WebSphere, JBoss, and Sun.

In this webcast, we provide an overview of the new Microsoft data application development technologies and show how these technologies can benefit Microsoft SQL Server 2008 programmers.

Presenters: Anthony Carrabino, Senior Product Manager, Microsoft Corporation, and David Sceppa, Program Manager, Microsoft Corporation

Anthony Carrabino is a senior product manager for the Microsoft SQL Server team, and he has been involved with database technologies since 1990. Before joining Microsoft, Anthony owned and operated Vista Software, which created the popular VistaDB database engine for the Microsoft .NET Framework and the widely used Apollo Xbase data engine. Anthony also sold the Firefly data access components to Macromedia, which later became the Data Connectivity Kit for Flash.

David Sceppa is a program manager on the Microsoft ADO.NET team, and he has been working with Microsoft data access technologies since the days of Microsoft FoxPro 2.x. David speaks frequently at developer conferences such as TechEd, and he is the author of three books from Microsoft Press, including Programming Microsoft ADO.NET 2.0.
